At Jackson Lees Group, we’re proud to be part of a community that champions opportunity, education, and growth. That’s why we were delighted to support the St Vincent’s School Debate Competition, which took place yesterday afternoon and brought together some of the brightest young minds from Merseyside.
This inspiring event, hosted at St Vincent’s School, was a celebration of critical thinking, confidence, and communication. Organised in collaboration with Bermans and MAPD, the competition gave students a platform to explore complex ideas and express their views in a structured, supportive environment.
What Happened Yesterday?
The afternoon began with a lively mock debate on the question: “Is social media a good thing or a bad thing?” Beth Walker, Solicitor in the Crime & Prison Law Team at Broudie Jackson Canter, faced off against Arbaaz Mehmood, Paralegal in the Wills, Trusts and Probate team at Jackson Lees. Their spirited exchange gave students a front-row view of how legal professionals craft and deliver persuasive arguments.
Following the debate, students had the chance to take part in a Q&A session with the lawyers, asking thoughtful questions and gaining insight into the world of law and advocacy.
The main competition saw pupils from St Vincent’s School split into two teams to debate the topic: “Should we use force to bring about peace?” Both sides presented compelling arguments, but it was the team arguing against the use of force that won the day.
To keep energy levels high and spirits lifted, snacks and refreshments were provided throughout the afternoon, adding to the warm, welcoming atmosphere of the event.
Conor McSorley from Smart School Council chaired the debates, while colleagues from both Jackson Lees Group and Bermans served as judges. Their thoughtful feedback and encouragement helped make the experience even more meaningful for the students involved.
Why It Matters
The St Vincent’s Debate Competition is more than just an event, it’s a reflection of our shared commitment to education, inclusion, and opportunity.
By supporting initiatives like this, we aim to break down barriers and create spaces where all young people can thrive.
Looking Ahead
At Jackson Lees Group, we believe in the power of young voices. Yesterday’s event reminded us just how much potential lies in the next generation and how important it is to nurture that potential.
We’re proud to have played a part in this brilliant initiative and look forward to continuing our support for projects that inspire, empower, and open doors for young people across our local Merseyside community.
