Alexandra Jones, solicitor specialising in Medical Negligence at Jackson Lees, discusses what the risks of eye treatment are and how we can help if something might have gone wrong.

What can go wrong?

We help clients who have suffered from damage to their vision as a result of various failings in their care. This includes surgery that has gone wrong, such as for cataracts, or delayed diagnoses of conditions including glaucoma, arteritis and detached retinas.

Some eye conditions cause a rapid deterioration in vision, so a delay in treatment can have a big impact on someone’s prognosis, whereas other conditions take a long time to have an effect and the person affected might not notice their vision getting gradually worse over time.

If someone already has reduced vision in one eye, it is crucial that any worsening of the other eye is picked up quickly, as any damage to the remaining eye can have a huge impact on their life.

How it affects your life

Many of us take our vision for granted, but either a total or partial loss of sight can affect all areas of someone’s life. Imagine losing your job, or being told that you can no longer drive or that you won’t be able to see your children or grandchildren as they grow up. It can be particularly hard if you have had surgery which you thought was going to make your vision better, but end up in a worse position due to negligence.

How we can help

If you have suffered from negligent care, we will try as far as possible to put you back into the position you were in before. Although we cannot get your sight back, we can claim for compensation to help you to pay for various things to make your life easier. This can include getting a carer to help you both at home and outside the house, or compensating you for loss of earnings if you are no longer able to work and support your family.

We can claim for adaptations to your home as well as equipment to help you to carry out tasks safely such as cooking and cleaning and you can even get devices to help you dress independently, such as clothes fasteners or colour detectors.

There are also many exciting technological developments that help people with reduced or loss of vision to have a much better quality of life. These include smart devices, apps and gadgets that respond to voice activation or enable you to use braille to access mobile devices. We are able to claim for such items that can help to get you back on track and get on with your life.
